Why were elaborate tombs so important to pharaohs as well as everyday Egyptians?

Egyptians believed in afterlife, and specifically, they believed that they would continue having the same body in the afterlife and be surrounded by the objects they were buried with.

So, in order to have a good afterlife, they needed to prepare for it, and the elaborate tombs were their preparation.
