Numbers in chemistry are often expressed in scientific notation because the numbers involved are either too large or too small. Scientific notation is a system in writing or working with numbers that would make it much easier to deal with. For instance, you have 1200000000000000, by looking at the number it would be tedious to write this again an again. So, we would opt to writing it in its scientific notation which would be 1.2x10^15.
