the mixture can contain more or less iron, but iron sulfide always contains equal amounts of iron and sulphur.

the iron and sulphur atoms are not joined together in the mixture, but they are joined together in iron sulfide.

Their properties don't change, therefore, Iron remains magnetic and sulphur still floats on water thus it can be separated.

Compound:

They form black solid.

Properties change due to heat. It becomes non-magnetic and can no longer be separated manually.
