As far as I could remember from reading, he never did. I even looked and I saw that he never did. If he did, then it should be in the book. More than likely, he did it to take back to his shelter so he could use it to maybe make something to cook on (metal works to cook.) Tell me if I am wrong though! Maybe I could help further.

Well actually I think he did.Probably because he wanted to make fire out of it so he can I think signal the airplane or to keep himself warm for his time staying in the forest.
