The purpose of having leak and gated channels for the neuron is that the leak channels will allow the movement of sodium and potassium across the cell membrane downward from high concentration gradient to low concentration gradient. With the leakage of ions across the cell membrane, there is maintainence of a stable resting potential of cells.
