Its the "charging" system. It consists of an alternator (which is similar to an electric motor only in reverse. It is powered by a rubber belt which is connected to a pulley on thd engine. When the engine is running, it turns the belt which turns the pulley on the alternator.) Inside the alternator is a part called a regulator which controls thd voltage that is output to the battery.
