Valence electrons are those electrons that are found on the shell or orbital that is furthest away from the nucleus of an atom.  So for example in the case of Sodium which has 3 shells, as can be deduced from it electronic configuration 2.8.1, the single electron on the third shell would be the valence electron of Sodium.
