Describe how the value of a number written in scientific notation changes when you increase the exponent by 1

The number gets multiplied by 10.

If you have a number written as

[tex]a\times 10^k,\quad a \in\mathbb{R},\quad k\in\mathbb{Z}[/tex]

If you multiply this number by 10 you get

[tex]a\times 10^k\times 10 = a\times(10^k\times 10)=a\times 10^{k+1}[/tex]
